Pennsylvania commuters can avoid long toll lines and save valuable time and money on toll roads such as the Pennsylvania Turnpike with an E-Z Pass device.

With daily traffic volume for 2008 estimated at 86,000 vehicles , an E-Z Pass transponder could do much to save the busy commuter time and money. However, before one signs up for an E-Z Pass account, the commuter must first determine which type of account to sign up for.

Personal vs. Business E-Z Pass Account

Personal accounts apply to passenger-type vehicles registered to an individual.

Commercial accounts apply to businesses that operate vehicles used in a commercial business. While the Pennsylvania commercial account provides more options for funding the transponder than the personal E-Z Pass account, the application process requires more documentation. Commercial E-Z Pass holders, in addition to completing several forms, must secure a surety bond.

Commercial applicants can only obtain an E-Z Pass account by downloading, completing and mailing the forms to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, while personal accounts have several options by which to apply for the device.

Obtain an E-Z Pass at a Retail Location (Go Pak)

Pennsylvania commuters can pick up an E-Z Pass transponder, known as Go Pak, by visiting one of the Department of Pennsylvania approved retail locations. As of this writing, participating AAA offices, Giant Eagle and GetGo are just a few of the participating retailers. Visit the Pennsylvania Turnpike website for a current and complete list of approved retailers.

Commuters who purchase the Go Pak device have 72 hours from the time of purchase to register the transponder. Tag owners can register the Go Pack on the E-Z Pass website or by calling the E-Z Pass service center.

Apply for E-Z Pass Online

By visiting the Pennsylvania Turnpike website, commuters can apply for an E-Z Pass account online. Before accessing the website, however, applicants should ensure they have the basic information necessary to open an account such as:

  • Driver's license number
  • Vehicle Information (year, make, model, color and license plate number)
  • Payment method (either a valid credit card or bank account). Online applicants cannot use checks or cash as a method for funding the E-Z Pass account (Pennsylvania requires a minimum prepaid balance of $35 per transponder).

E-Z Pass by Mail or Fax

Applicants who prefer not to apply online can download, print the E-Z Pass application and mail it to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, E-Z Pass Customer Service Center, 7631 Derry Street, Harrisburg, PA 17111, or fax it to 717-565-7311.

Apply for E-Z Pass by Phone

Lastly, individuals can call the Customer Service Center at 1-877-PENNPASS (736-6727) and open an E-Z Pass account by phone.

E-Z Pass Accepted in Other States

The time and money savings is not limited to the state of Pennsylvania alone. The E-Z Pass device is currently accepted in 11 other states along the US east coast from Maine to Virginia and as far west as Illinois.
